Add a payment fee (surcharge)

Ask your customers to cover part of your online card processing costs by adding an optional percentage fee.

The Payment fee option lets you add a percentage fee on top of invoices that are paid online with a credit card via Stripe. You can set it as a default for your business, or add it to a single invoice.

⚠️ Check your local rules first. Passing card fees on to customers (surcharging) is restricted or illegal in many countries and regions. Make sure it's allowed where you and your customers are based before enabling it.

Set a default payment fee for your business

Use this option if you want the same fee to apply across your invoices.

Go to your "Settings > Business settings > Payment fee" page.
Click "Add payment fee".
Read the "Check local rules first" message, then click "I understand".
Enter your percentage in the field, for example 3% of the amount paid by credit card.
Click "Save changes".

💡 Choose a percentage that roughly matches what you pay in online processing fees.

Add a payment fee to a single invoice

You can also set the fee on one invoice only.

Open the invoice you want to edit.
In the Control panel on the right, expand Payment fee.
Click "Add payment fee".
Enter the percentage of the amount paid.
Click "Save".

How the payment fee is applied

Online payments only: the fee is charged when your customer pays the invoice online. It is never added to payments recorded offline.

Credit cards only: the fee applies to credit cards paid via Stripe. Debit cards, prepaid cards, and wallets are never charged a fee.

The invoice total stays the same: the fee is added on top at the moment of payment, so the invoice amount doesn't change.

Remove a payment fee

Click the delete icon next to the payment fee. This works both in your business settings and in the invoice Control panel.
